Austrian M1895 Steyr bayonet with scabbard and frog. Captured and Converted for M91 Carcano by installing a new crossguard, blued overall and blade sharpened in the Italian M1891 factory fashion. The frog is an Italian M91 Brown type. OEWG. WILL NOT MOUNT ON A RIFLE. The MRID is just a few thousandths too small to go over the barrel despite being reamed AFTER having been blued. Calamandrie shows this on page 274 and suggests that it may have been for use on a Greek Y:1903 series rifle but it's not even close and the lug and muzzle ring line up perfectly for the Carcano. I suspect these were just a failed conversion attempt and no one checked to see if they worked until about 500 were already made. (I derived this production number from known serial numbers on the crossguard.)
